From: "Lopez, Calixto" To: "NYCgoth-L (E-mail)" Subject: My Introduction Date: Thu, 20 Jul 2000 17:21:35 -0400 Greetings! 93 My name is Calixto Lopez. I don't really have any cool nicknames. I've been lurking for almost two weeks now after signing up for this list. I've decided to join the chorus of people who are introducing themselves. I'm 27, born October 23, 1972. Yes, I'm a scorpio (sagitarrius rising). And a Geri-goth, I suppose. Not to mention a corporate goth. I am a born New Yorker, but haven't lived in the city since I was 5. Until I moved back a year ago. My family moved to Hawaii, then Singapore, then Mexico. We returned to the area when I got to High School, when we moved to Westport, CT. I went to college at Hobart in upstate. I majored in Political Science, with other studies in philosophy and history. Upon graduation I moved to Miami, where my family was, and where I intended to go to law school. Funding for that didn't work out, and I stayed. It was only after college that I even found out about the subculture. My friends and I had always heard music by various gothic bands while in High School, but I never even knew a subculture existed. My High School and College were prep hells, so I had no clue (except for one other freak, a friend from NYC). After college, I LARPed a bit, and the games were held at the local goth club, The Kitchen. Ah! Revelation! I loved the music, the clothes, the dance style...soon I was making my way through the scene, hitting the clubs all over Miami and Ft. Lauderdale for four years ('95-'99). I moved here from Miami to find work in the securities industry, on August 10th of last year. Having been rather active in the goth scene in Miami, I was looking forward to enjoying the fabled delights here. Unfortunately, that has not come to pass as much as I wished. I ended up getting a job an hour away in New Jersey, working the evening shift. This means I get back to the City about 2 AM (on a good night) after work. That plus the fact I'm dressed for workputs a damper on going out, especially on Fridays, ...and the combination of commuting and studying for my series 7 means I'm exhausted on Saturdays. I have had a chance to go to the Bank just before it closed, I went to Albion once, and one lucky Friday, in March, I went to Byzantium. I enjoyed the experience mightily. I especially liked the relaxed atmosphere of Byzantium after a long day at work. Hopefully, once I get licensed, and make some more money, I can go out more. Especially once our office moves to Jersey City. Favorite Bands: SoM, London after Midnight, Apoptygma Beserk, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Gary Neuman, This Mortal Coil, Dead Can Dance, Black Tape for a Blue Girl, Christian Death and Fields of the Nephilim. I also listen to Classical music and Opera (I love Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Strauss, Stravinski, Orff and Holst), and some New Age music. I also listen to some industrial bands, as it strikes my fancy. Clothing style: Well either a minimalist black (which I can wear to work in the casual environment, though I usually wear shirt and tie). All my fancy stuff is still in Miami. I usually wear a tail coat, vest, poet shirt and boots when I can. A blousy shirt or a mandarin collar shirt with vest, maybe...etc. I do like a Victorian or Enlightenment look, but its usually been outside my budget range. I also would like to get some fetish garb, if I can afford it. I used to wear makeup, but its not feasible now. I keep my hair regulation short for work, so its rather bland. I like to wear silver jewelry, such as a few rings, pendants, etc. No piercings or tattoos at this time. My interests include history, philosophy (particularly Aristotle, Spinoza, Nietzsche and Rand), religion, and the occult--especially Hermeticism and Thelema. I also try to keep up with scientific developments, especially in astronomy (I'm an amateur astronomer) and biology. I've always sought to be something of a renaissance man. I like Lovecraft (ever since I discovered him in High School), and I read the annotated edition of Dracula in 8th grade. I still enjoy the book. I like Anne Rice's Vampire Novels. I enjoy the writings of Ayn Rand. Plus I'm a big Sci Fi and Fantasy geek. I was reading Verne in 4th grade. I particularly like: Arthur C. Clarke, Issac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. Not to mention I like Sci-Fi TV and movies, even bad ones. For fantasy, I've always loved Tolkien, who I read long ago. I play RPGs. I used to play D&D back when I was a wee lad. I've played lots of White Wolf in Miami both table top and LARP. My favorite game from that design studio is Mage. I've also done some Palladium. I've not gamed since I moved. If there are games running, I'd love to take part. Hmm, I guess you can say I'm a geek too. I can't think of anything else to put in here. Anyone who wishes, can email me for more information. I hope to meet all of you in person. I hope to go to the event at the Limelight, as I hear the club is very beautiful. The event's being held in the Giger room, and I'm quite a fan. 93 Calixto Lopez
